In either case, the narrator may remain neutral with regard to characters and events, or the narrator may evaluate thoughts and actions for the reader. Symbolism: Any person, object, setting, name or event that suggests more than its literal meaning can be a symbol. Symbolic meanings are not so much hidden in a story, as they are carefully placed and woven into the texture of the work.

To identify and interpret symbols in a story, pay close attention to language and apply common sense. Some symbols are standard or conventional, appearing throughout literature, while others may be highly unusual authorial and gain their significance from the context of the individual work in which they appear.

Theme: The theme of a story is the idea which binds the elements of the story together. It may be explicitly stated, or it may be communicated entirely through the elements of the C The theme is essentially the truth or comment on life that the author intends to communicate to the reader. In addition to what the author of a work intended to say at the time a story was written, however, a work may also have other meanings and significance to readers of a different time period.

Consequently, one interpretation of a story is NOT just as good as any other. While multiple interpretations of a work of literature are possible, good interpretations are based on evidence from the text and make sense of as many of the elements of the work as possible.

Style, Tone, and Irony: The characteristic manner in which an author uses language to create specific effects constitutes his or her style, and is influenced by such things as word choice, diction, sentence length and structure, tone, and irony. Tone reveals the attitude taken by the author or narrator toward characters, places, and events—whether that attitude is sympathetic, humorous, indifferent, angry, etc.

Indeed, without paying careful attention to tone, one may miss irony—a figure of speech in which the actual intent of words is expressed in words that carry the opposite meaning.

This means that the story presented in the novel is fictitious. We will therefore commence our definition of the novel by first of all defining prose fiction. You can see that we have been mentioning story in our definition of fiction. Stories are usually narrated by someone, orally or written. This means that prose fiction is presented in a narrative form. There are other forms of prose that are presented in a narrative form that are not classified as prose fiction.

Can you mention some examples? Some of them include essays, biographies, some historical accounts and many others. For instance, biography is presented in a narrative form but it is a factual account of the life of an individual.

Also the fact that prose fiction tells a story that is not true distinguishes it from history which is a factual account of events that took place in the life of a people or a nation with real names of the participants, actual dates and identifiable locations like towns, countries or villages. This is history and not prose fiction. The novel is the longest form of prose fiction followed by the novella while the short story is the shortest. The length of any genre of prose fiction is measured by the number of pages that make up that particular work.

It is said that the short story is so short that it can be contained in as few as five to twenty five pages pages ; the novella, about sixty to one hundred and seventy pages while any work in that genre that is above that is categorised as novel.

Another important factor in the novel is that though it is fiction, it is presented in a realistic manner and presents a slice of life known as verisimilitude. This means that events are presented in a way that it will look like a real life story; factual account but they are not.

In the novel we extend our sympathies. This helps us to understand an aspect of human life that we would have missed if we did not read the novel which is an extension of life. When we empathise with others, we also understand them.

The novel presents the closest imitation of life because of empathy and sympathy in it whereby the readers identify themselves with the characters. The personal hero is sometimes referred to as the protagonist. The novelist represents the social, political, and personal realities of a place and period with clarity and details that make it very close to life.

A novel could be based on history but the author uses vivid and graphic representations of characters and incidents to present an entertaining story.

The emergence of the English novel was influenced by several factors which were historical, moral, structural, and the subject matter at every stage of its development.
