It was in the Scouts, through service projects that benefited the community, face to face mentoring of younger scouts, and building a cohesive and self-sustaining unit, that I learned that leadership was the way to serve others and to put their good before my own. Becoming an officer and submariner in the Navy would be an honor and privilege.

The years I have spent growing as a leader at home and in scouts has shown me the importance of service and I look forward to pursuing future service to my country starting as a midshipman at the United States Naval Academy. Notice that this essay is not a laundry list of what the candidate did in high school but rather what the candidate did to find out more about what life would be like as a midshipman and an officer in the Navy. Even better or as an additional step would have been for the candidate to visit a Naval Reserve unit.

To receive full consideration, interested officers for Academic Year should apply no later than December 31, Officers selected will be recalled to active duty and assigned orders for an officer-instructor three year tour commencing July Recalled officers will remain on the reserve active status list and will remain eligible for promotion consideration before reserve selection boards.

Selections will be made only after USNA placement officers are confident that USNA billets will not be filled from the active duty pool of potential officer instructors. Applicants will be made aware of their selection status by mid-April. Final arrangements are contingent upon PCS funding being available through the Navy. The PMI program provides a stable source of officers in the grade of Lieutenant Commander with the appropriate professional experience and academic preparation to teach at the USNA.

While the majority of midshipmen will choose their majors freely, the needs of the Naval Service take precedence. Navy must complete academic majors in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics disciplines. At the end of plebe year, midshipmen choose a major course of study with counsel from academic and military advisors.
